When walking into the ancient Novices’ Dormitory’s quarter, one might see masters and their pupils hard at work, using handmade tools that are more than half a century old. This school follows the centuries-old artisanal Florentine tradition, where the master follows the student during the course of his daily activities. In fact, there is a significant history behind how it was founded. The school is the biggest artisan workshop in Florence, recognized as an artistic and historical symbol.
Scuola del Cuoio is a leather design school offering training courses in leather crafts.Scuola del Cuoio was founded after the World War II thanks to the cooperation between Santa Croce’s Basilica Franciscan friars and Gori & Casini families. They taught war orphans work skills that could allow them to earn a living: The art of manufacturing leather goods. By the end of the 50s, together with the Minister of Justice, Scuola del Cuoio started to offer courses both for Murate prisoners and Reformatories.
Currently, Scuola del Cuoio is well-known worldwide for its products’ quality and for maintaining traditional techniques. Scuola del Cuoio offers courses from 3 up to 12 months in length and short courses from 3 hours up to 1 week for students, tourists, and visitors.
